WIP Weekend

As a writer, I thrive on deadlines.  They give me something to aim for.  Then they give me something to panic about.  Then they give me a whole bunch of regret as they pass by without my having met them even slightly.

When it comes to knitting and sewing, I’m a little bit better with deadlines, but only just.  The problem lies in the fact that no-one else knows about my deadlines, which leaves only one person accountable for them: me.  And I’m not going to lie, I’m a little bit lazy and prone to procrastination when it comes to enforcing said deadlines.

Then I started this blog and got one of these:

My New Friend

Actually, that’s not quite true; it was the Chef who got me one of those, after I told him I’d seen one on special while I was away in Beechworth.  He sent me a text message that I will now quote (mostly) verbatim:

I’ll go get one … if you don’t tell me [the make and name] I’ll go buy the wrong one.

So really, I had no choice in the matter.

I may look happy in that photo above, but there’s a little bit of me that’s consumed with jealousy at the fact that my dress form is getting to wear that dress before I do.  For almost a week, it’s been sitting in the corner, clad in a Summery dress with a cut-out back that I really want to wear, mocking me, letting the skirt ripple gently in the breezes from the door…  Argh!

And now, it’s getting to wear an almost finished cardigan, although I’m not feeling quite as jealous on that count.  It’s not exactly cardigan weather, although it may be next week, the way the weather’s going of late.

WIP Weekend

And now we reach the point where I explain what on earth a dress form and a blog have to do with deadlines.  It’s simply this: I want those garments off my snooty, envy-inducing dress form and onto me.  Well, the dress at least.  The cardigan can go into a drawer for now.  And since I’m useless at enforcing my own deadlines, I decided to pass the accountability on to the internet and declare my plans to you all in a nice, public place.

We have long weekend coming up, which means I have three days to get to grips with these WIPs.  By midnight on Monday the 26th of January, I will have achieved the following goals:

  1. Finish the dress.
  2. Start sewing the neckband on my cardigan.

Now, it may look as though I’m letting myself off lightly with the cardigan, but that’s hand sewing we’re talking about.  Plus, I don’t actually have any buttons for it yet, so a completed garment remains but a partially-realised dream for now.

So those are my plans for the weekend – what are yours?  Are the any WIPs that need to be attacked?

Right, now you have an official deadline and the world (well, at least your enthusiastic fan club) will be on their toes as of February 27 to see if you have accomplished the goals. Feel no pressure at all…. 😉

Ah, it is indeed weekend again. My best mate is coming back after two weeks in Thailand, so I’m thrilled to hear about his adventures. Nooo, not jealous at all. Anyway, he’s probably just been soaking on a beach somewhere and such lazy activities would drive me nuts.

Then there was the tack room which would need a good Spring cleaning. Well, I have started but, I get distracted all the time and haven’t quite grabbed the broom and dust pan yet. I had set my mind to it, but my landlord have expressed a desire to go to Skara for some shopping tomorrow. Since he has a badly injured shoulder he doesn’t fancy the idea of driving so it appears that I am in for a roadtrip. There might be a slight chance I pop in at the equestrian shop to check out the Spring collection…

On Sunday I will definitely get myself together and commence on the tack room. Unless of course the mate mentioned above is recovered from the jetlag… 🙂

It’s exactly the motivation I need to get things done! Plus, I have another write-in next weekend and I’d love to be able to wear a brand new dress to it. 😀

Your weekend sounds like a great mix of productive and fun things… provided the productivity is fully rewarded by fun. I must admit, an unexpected roadtrip sounds rather appealing, even if it has disturbed your plans somewhat. Hopefully it all turns out OK in the end.

Well, the “reward” turned out to be a sore throat. So I think I’ll spend the day indoors, cuddling with the cats who don’t fancy the idea of snow. I have more roadtrips on the agenda. The next one will be conducted the upcoming week… 🙂

Colds seem to be a theme this weekend – it’s no good at all. I hope you’re feeling better in time for your roadtripping plans next weekend.

Katie they are beautiful and I can’t wait to see them finished!

I might just have to memory bank your WIP Weekend and use it down the track, particularly during uni semester, and as we draw closer to our wedding (seven months from today!!).

My WIP weekend will consist of:

    1. Hanging out the kitchen curtains
    2. Going to the hardware store and getting some sandpaper and a sample pot…colour undecided
    3. Sanding back and painting my planter boxes

I can’t wait to see your finished products next week!

Thank-you! I’m excited to be this close to finally wearing that dress in particular – it’s been under construction for over a month now. And the cardigan was started mid-way through 2014, I believe, although I think the delay there is a little more understandable… 😀

I hope your WIP weekend plans are going well so far. It sounds like you have a fun project going there.

If I could construct a dress in a month, I’d be very happy hehe 😀

My WIP weekend was torn to shreds when I woke up with a nasty cold virus thing yesterday morning. My weekend has consisted of green tea with lemon and honey, vitamin C tabs, and lying on the couch watching tennis. Not exactly the way I wanted to spend it but at least I’m able to blog plan in between coughs!

It’s the absolute worst when you get sick right at the beginning of a long weekend. I hope you’re feeling better soon.

If you don’t put up a post on Tuesday saying you have done what you said you will then we will all be very disappointed in you and you will feel very ashamed of yourself!!

I am doing ok for WIPs at the moment because I have finished a couple of things this week 🙂 But I must finish my daughter’s dungarees; the deadline is 31 January. The shame will be on me if you don’t hear about them by then!

    Have a great weekend.

Indeed – shame is a great motivator. And I’d much rather have a new dress and a partially completed cardigan than a feeling of regret and disappointment.

Best of luck with your own deadlines! They really do help at times. 😀

Lucky you with the dress form! If only I had room for one… I think it should prove to be a great motivator for finishing off WIP’s- as you said, it sits there wearing your dress, mocking you! You can’t avoid it, it is there reminding you to finish sewing every time you look at it. Whereas my WIP’s get shoved onto my tiny sewing desk along side the sewing machine, them moved onto the washing machine in order to have space to sew or repair some other more pending task, then moved off the washing machine in order for washing to be done, then shoved in to a box to wait for the next time – possibly weeks away- when I get a chance to sew again, by which time the WIP may well have been forgotten or passed over for a newer and more interesting project!
As for my weekend plans/ current WIP’s – i did manage to finish fixing my too large top this morning, I picked out some fabric combinations from the stash to make a couple more tops with the same pattern, and made a chocolate cookie dough cheesecake i have been promising to make for about 3 weeks! So not to bad so far.

The dress form is literally sitting in the only place available for it! I was worried my cats would be more interested in attacking and/or climbing it, but so far they’ve been treating it as though it’s beneath their notice.

You certainly have some sneaky WIPS, by the sound of it. It is much easier to forget them when they’re not in view – I know I’d do that myself, which is why I force myself to leave them out as much as possible, shaming me for letting them remain unfinished (and picking up more cat fur than I really want, the ideal amount being none). With my knitting, I won’t let myself start a new project until the old one is completed and that is a brilliant motivator.

Good luck with all of your weekend WIP plans! One of them in particular sounds absolutely delicious.

WIPs – ahh yes, I have a few of those. In fact I found one last week when we cleaned out the shed – grandmother’s garden hand sewn quilt started in 1974! Just a wee while ago! I’d been wondering where it was but not sure whether I really wanted to find it as now I feel obliged to finish it. Have actually laid it out on the floor, found that it’s nearly as big as queen size so I’ve started to work on it again mainly ‘cos my quilting buddies said it would be a shame not to! Weekend plans – a trip to Mlebourne, a 60th party and a BBQ – not much time for me and that darm quilt! – what a shame!

It definitely sounds like it’s worth continuing – a quilt that big would be incredibly useful, as well as a bit of an heirloom. Besides, it’s not as though you have dozens of other projects to be getting on with, is it? Oh, wait… 😀

You retired people don’t need to worry about your plans being thrown out on the weekend – you have the entire rest of the week, too! So jealous.

Jam, jam and more jam. I bought a heap of peaches, nectarines and apricots yesterday and i HAVE to cook them up by the end of the long weekend. This jam frenzy is going to be the end of me. I already have several litres of the stuff and will soon double that …

On the plus side, mason jars have reached saturation point in the Sydney crockery market. Pretentious mason jar “tumblers” have been heavily discounted, so cheap jars! I had a condescending shop assistant tell me they sold “real” mason jars when i bought a bunch with some lids, because apparently you can only use mason jars in a proper mason jar box, otherwise it won’t be real jam …

You mean I’ve been eating fake jam my entire life? I’ll have to tell my mum now. What a waste!

A jam frenzy sounds like an incredibly productive way to spend the weekend, especially when you’re using all of my favourite fruits. You’ll be well-stocked with jam for those Winter months and you’ll have some handy home-made gifts to hand, if you can bear the thought of parting with it. I hope it’s going well!
